Saltwater spray, intense UV radiation, and electrical noise from alternators or livewell pumps are constant threats to vessel electronics. Implementing a proactive maintenance routine protects multi-function displays and prevents costly mid-season failures.
1. Preventing Electrical Noise & Screen Interference
If your fishfinder screen displays vertical bands of static when turning on your bilge pump, livewell pump, or outboard motor, you are experiencing Electromagnetic Interference (EMI).
- Separate Power Connections: Connect your MFD power cable directly to the house battery bus, never to the cranking battery or livewell pump harness.
- Install Ferrite Noise Cores: Snap ferrite EMI filter cores onto power and transducer cables near the display unit.
- Route Cables Separately: Maintain at least 6 to 12 inches of separation between high-current power cables and sensitive transducer/NMEA lines.
2. Terminal Protection & Dielectric Sealing
Exposed pin connectors on Multi-Function Displays and VHF antenna fittings should be treated with dielectric grease and sealed with dual-wall adhesive-lined heat shrink tubing. Apply UV protectant treatments like 303 Aerospace Protectant to sun covers and vinyl dashboard console boots to prevent cracking.
